After all the festive excess of December, January is often a quieter time where we give our credit cards (and our livers) a break. If you're planning to take it a little easier this month, Netflix has your back.
This month the streaming giant is adding some must-see movies including the inspiring biopic Joy, in which Jennifer Lawrence (pictured) gives an Oscar-nominated performance as the woman who invented the Miracle Mop. Meryl Streep is also on top form in Nora Ephron's Julie & Julia, eating up the screen as larger-than-life American chef Julia Child.
January is also an especially strong month for documentaries on Netflix. Films about award-winning human rights activist Malala and iconic shoe designer Manolo Blahnik are among the new additions, joined by Rotten, an intriguing series exploring the dark side of the food production industry.

Annie (2014)
Exec produced by Jay Z and Will Smith, this is a modern take on the classic Broadway musical featuring new songs by Sia alongside classics like "It's the Hard Knock Life." Quvenzhané Wallis stars as little orphan Annie with Cameron Diaz as mean Miss Hannigan and Jamie Foxx as Daddy Warbucks.

Black Lightning (2018)
Cress Williams stars in a new superhero series based on the DC Comics character of the same name. He plays Jefferson Pierce a.k.a. Black Lightning, a retired superhero who returns to the fray when a dangerous gang threatens his local community.

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee Collections (2018)
A new season of the quirky comedy chat show. Each episode sees Jerry Seinfeld pick up a different comedian in his vintage car, then take her/him for a drive and a caffeine-fuelled catch-up. And there's no singing!

Despicable Me 2 (2013)
Steve Carell's baddie-turned-goodie Gru is dispatched to track down a master criminal voiced by Benjamin Bratt in this entertaining sequel. The voice cast also includes Kristen Wiig, Russell Brand and Steve Coogan but once again, it's those super-cute Minions who steal the show.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (2017)
Second and final season of the quirky sci-fi series based on Douglas Adams' novels of the same name. The History Boys ' Samuel Barnett stars as a self-styled "holistic detective" who recruits Elijah Wood's hotel porter as his reluctant sidekick.

Dirty Money (2017)
A brand new Netflix original documentary series. Each episode will see a different director explore a different type of scandal or corruption threatening the business world.

Disjointed (2018)
Another 10 episodes of the Netflix sitcom co-created by genre maestro Chuck Lorre ( The Big Bang Theory, Mom, Roseanne). Oscar winner Kathy Bates stars as a "cannabis legend" who hires her son and his mates to help her run an LA marijuana dispensary.

A new Netflix original series exploring the lives of history's most notorious drug kingpins, and the men and women who tried – and sometimes managed – to bring them down.

Dynasty (2017)
Not the classic '80s primetime soap, but a teen-oriented reboot from the people behind Gossip Girl and The O.C. Sadly, it doesn't seem likely that Joan Collins will be making a guest appearance any time soon.

Entourage (2015)
The film version of the popular HBO show about a young, in-demand Hollywood star (Adrian Grenier) and his posse of hangers-on. Cameos from Calvin Harris, Jessica Alba, Liam Neeson and loads more are great value, but the film isn't quite as slick as the TV series.

Eye in the Sky (2015)
Helen Mirren rocks the screen as a conflicted military intelligence officer in this gripping thriller about the ethical challenges of modern-day drone warfare. Aaron Paul and the late Alan Rickman (in his final live-action performance) co-star.

Fargo (2017)
Season three of the US black comedy series, which introduces new characters and scenarios each season. This time, Ewan McGregor takes on a dual role as twin brothers divided by resentment over their father's inheritance. Carrie Coon and David Thewlis co-star.

Grace and Frankie (2018)
Season four of the popular Netflix comedy series. Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin star as lifelong frenemies who finally bond with one another after their respective husbands reveal they are gay, and in a relationship with one another. Lisa Kudrow joins the cast in a recurring role, playing a manicurist who comes between Grace and Frankie.

He Named Me Malala (2015)
An inspiring documentary film about Malala Yousafzai, the Nobel Prize-winning human rights activist who has campaigned for the rights of women, and especially girls' access to education, since she was very young.

Sixth and most recent season of the award-winning US drama series starring Claire Danes. Her troubled CIA officer Carrie Mathison is now working as an informal advisor to a female President-Elect (Elizabeth Marvel), but don't expect things to go smoothly. At all.

Joy (2015)
Jennifer Lawrence and Silver Linings Playbook director David O. Russell team up again for a film based on the life of Joy Mangano, a working-class New Yorker who made millions after she invented the Miracle Mop. Lawrence earned another Oscar nomination for her performance as Mangano; Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper also shine in supporting roles.

Julie & Julia (2009)
The late, great Nora Ephron directs this comedy-drama film about iconic American chef Julia Child (Meryl Streep) and a young New York woman called Julie (Amy Adams) who's trying to cook all 524 recipes from her most famous book. Child, a huge TV star in her day, was a real larger-than-life character and Streep's scene-stealing performance reflects this.

Live Free or Die Hard(2007)
Yippee ki-yay! Bruce Willis returns for a fourth Die Hard movie. This time, his iconic action hero John McClane teams up with a young computer hacker (Justin Long) to take down a dastardly cyber-terrorist (Timothy Olyphant). It's way better than a fourth Die Hard movie probably should be.

Llama Llama (2018)
A new kids' animated series based on Anna Dewdney's popular books of the same name. Netflix says Llama and his family will have "heart-warming adventures in a safe, friendly town," so it's definitely one all the family can watch.

Lovesick (2018)
Season three of the edgy British sitcom that began life as Scrotal Recall on Channel 4 before moving to Netflix with a rather classier name. Johnny Flynn stars as a man on a mission to reconnect with his sexual partners so he can inform them he's been diagnosed with an STI. Misfits ' Antonia Thomas and The Crown 's Daniel Ings co-star.

Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards (2016)
A thoroughly enjoyable documentary film about legendary shoe designer Manolo Blahnik. Rihanna, Anna Wintour and Naomi Campbell are among the fashion stars who pay tribute.

A documentary film about the 16th century German theologian whose writings called out the excesses of the Catholic Church and helped to spark the Protestant Reformation.

Sixth season of the DreamWorks spin-off series starring the stylish and smooth-talking feline from the Shrek movies. It's aimed at younger viewers but grown-ups should find it pretty entertaining, too.

A brand new Netflix original series set in Scotland. The plot follows a killer who brutally murders a young couple, then tries to hides among their feuding families in the rural Highlands.

Season two of the whip-smart US teen drama featuring loads of characters who will be familiar to Archie Comics fans. KJ Apa, Camila Mendes, and Lili Reinhart lead a bright young cast.

A new six-part documentary series exploring food industry waste, fraud and corruption, and its potentially devastating effects on our health. Rotten sounds like thought-provoking viewing – and you can find out more and watch a trailer here.

Steven Spielberg's take on the Roald Dahl classic is visually impressive, charmingly performed and largely faithful to the original novel. Mark Rylance stars as the Big Friendly Giant, with newcomer Ruby Barnhill as Sophie, the orphan who befriends him.

Grimsby a.k.a. The Brothers Grimsby(2016)
Sacha Baron Cohen co-writes and stars in this typically outrageous action comedy about a refined MI6 agent (Mark Strong) forced to team up with his yobbish brother (Baron Cohen) for a life-or-death assignment. The excellent cast also includes Isla Fisher, Rebel Wilson and Penélope Cruz.

The Open House (2018)
A Netflix original horror film starring 13 Reasons Why actor Dylan Minnette. He and his mother (played by relative newcomer Piercey Dalton) are excited to move into their new home, but soon find themselves besieged by menacing forces.

A Netflix original film based on the true story of Jan Lewman, a polka star from Pennsylvania who tricked his fans into investing in a Ponzi scheme. Jack Black, Jenny Slate, Jason Schwartzman and Jacki Weaver lead a terrific cast.

Trolls: The Beat Goes On (2018)
A new family-oriented series that picks up the action from Trolls, the hit 2016 movie featuring the voices of Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake. There are six episodes so Trolls should keep younger kids amused for a while.

It's lit! All eight seasons of the acclaimed US comedy-drama series from Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan arrive on Netflix. Mary Louise-Parker stars as a widowed mother of two who begins selling marijuana to support her family after her husband dies.
