David Lynch's back catalogue provides us with endless sartorial inspiration. Just think of Agent Cooper's trench and Audrey Horne's kitsch knitwear in Twin Peaks, or Dorothy Vallens' glittering halternecks in Blue Velvet. Wild at Heart, though, Lynch's cult film which won Best Picture at Cannes back in 1990, feels the most reflective of our wardrobe right now.
The neo-noir film is based on Barry Gifford's book of the same name and features Nicolas Cage as Sailor Ripley and Laura Dern as Lula Pace Fortune, a couple on the run from Lula's overbearing and disapproving mother – oh, and the gangsters she's paid to murder Sailor.
The movie is a surreal trip – think Bonnie and Clyde but more rock'n'roll – that nods to classic road trip films, The Wizard of Oz and Elvis Presley, and is worth a watch for the onscreen style alone.
Why does it feel so fresh? Click through to see the pieces worn by the characters that could easily slip into our wardrobe now.

Nicolas Cage's Snakeskin Jacket
Sailor murders one of Lula's mother's hitmen after being attacked with a knife. After serving jail time, Lula meets Sailor at the station and gives him his snakeskin jacket, which he rocks with bad boy attitude for the rest of the film. While we may not be wearing the animal print du jour with sunnies and a black T-shirt, there'll be plenty of it in our arsenal this season.
Snakeskin was all over the catwalks for AW18, from Gucci to Marni via Off-White and MSGM, and Zara, Topshop and Mango have a plethora of jackets, bags and shoes to choose from this autumn.

Isabella Rossellini's Eyebrows
Bow down at the altar of Isabella Rossellini. The once-highest paid model in the world (take that, Kendall) plays Perdita Durango, an old friend of Sailor's whom he seeks out in Texas to help him and Lula on their journey.
While there's plenty to love about Perdita's look – that lattice-leather crop top, that bleached hair, the single dagger earring – we can't take our eyes off her brows. Before Cara Delevingne, there was Perdita, encouraging us to use lashings of brow mascara and brush those babies up to the heavens.

Laura Dern's Hot Pink Dress
Laura Dern is a favourite of Lynch's, with roles in Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks as well as Wild at Heart. Lula has a pretty rough time of it throughout the film, but she gets her happy ending – and looks damn good doing it.
Lula wears body-con for the majority of the film, from lace leggings and bralets to this hot pink dress; she is, after all "hotter than Georgia asphalt".

...And Her '50s Polka Dot Number
From rebellious daughter-on-the-run to model mother, Lula undergoes quite the transformation when Sailor is serving his second prison sentence. By the end of the film we're met with a '50s-inspired look, all polka dots and barrelled hair, which we'll definitely be copying this season – perhaps with a faux fur coat and some killer patent boots.
