If you go on vacation and don't post at least a few stunning photos to Instagram, did you really go on vacation at all? I've never been on a trip where I didn't want to snap well over a hundred photos, but there are certain cities that are just so photogenic it's hard to put the camera down.

Today, Instagram released the "The Top Most Instagrammed Cities of 2017," based on data collected between January 1, 2017 and November 17, 2017. Some of these are no-brainers, but a few came as a surprise.

Ahead, check out some beautiful images of the world's most Instagrammed cities — and see if you can guess the location that grabbed the number one spot.

10. Barcelona, Spain

Between Parc Güell's fun, whimsical architecture, the Gothic Quarter, The Picasso Museum, the beach, and Gaudi's designs pretty much everywhere you turn, Barcelona is the stuff of Instagram dreams.

9. Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul has one of the most stunning skylines in the world, and the Blue Mosque and Grand Bazaar also offer stellar photo ops.

8. Jakarta, Indonesia

Jakarta is full of hidden gems and beautiful architecture, so it's the ideal city to explore with your camera (well, smartphone) in hand.

7. Saint Petersburg, Russia

As the cultural centre of Russia, Saint Petersburg is full of palaces, museums, churches, and even fortresses to visit and photograph.

6. Los Angeles, California

Palm trees, urban hikes, and street art everywhere you turn make L.A. the perfect place for photos.

5. Paris, France

Although the Eiffel Tower is Paris' most iconic landmark, photo opportunities abound at Notre Dame de Paris, The Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, and Jardin du Luxembourg, just to name a few.

4. São Paulo, Brazil

In addition to its natural beauty, visitors flock to photograph landmarks such as Ibirapuera Park, the municipal market, the city's cathedrals, and the theme park Hopi Hari.

3. London, United Kingdom

When visitors aren't relaxing at high tea, they're taking in (and Instagramming) landmarks like Big Ben, Tower Bridge, Westminster Abbey, the palaces, and outdoor spaces like Regent's Park.

2. Moscow, Russia

Moscow has unique architecture all its own and – if you happen to be there on a snowy day – you can take a pic that evokes a dreamlike quality, no filter needed.

1. New York, New York

...and the winner is, New York City. Even people who live in the city can't help Instagramming the skyline, the parks, the neighbourhood gems, and the interiors of museums. All five boroughs are full of cultural (and, of course, Instagram) opportunities, so an increasing number of tourists are venturing outside Manhattan to take it all in.
